The #STTABootcampSeries is returning to Rwanda for the third time, bringing together passionate individuals to explore and engage with community development through tourism in Africa. This year’s theme focuses on integrating communities into sustainable tourism, creating opportunities for meaningful connections and learning.
Key Learning Experiences
- Community Integration in Tourism: Engage with local communities in Nkotsi Village, Musanze District, and learn how they are being integrated into sustainable tourism initiatives.
- Kwita Izina – The Gorilla Naming Ceremony: Be part of the 20th celebration of this iconic event at Volcanoes National Park, highlighting the importance of gorilla conservation.
- Rwandan Genocide Memorial: Gain profound insights into Rwanda’s history and the impact of the genocide through a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Goals
- Understanding the Role of Arts and Culture: Delve into how arts, culture, and community engagement are crucial for sustainable tourism development.
- Support Conservation Efforts: Contribute to raising awareness and supporting efforts aimed at gorilla conservation.
- Education on Rwandan Genocide: Learn about the Rwandan Genocide, its historical context, and the enduring impact on the nation.
Key Activities
- Workshops and Discussions: Participate in a workshop on the interplay between arts, culture, and community engagement, and engage with local women enterprise groups to understand the role of arts in empowering women.
- Cultural Immersions: Experience Rwandan culture firsthand through activities such as hiking, basket weaving, pottery, traditional music and dance, and banana beer making.
- Memorial Visit: Take part in guided tours to explore the events of the genocide and pay respects to the victims.

About STTA Bootcamps STTA Bootcamps offer students field-based experiential learning opportunities, allowing them to design self-funded travel packages to visit tourism sites in Kenya and East Africa. Through these visits, students gain valuable insights into sustainable tourism operations and actively contribute to creating solutions for sustainability challenges.
