Community based tourism enterprises often lack proper business setups and experience challenges with product quality and market access.
STTA provided Technical Assistance for the Sustour Project in Kenya, a program of Switch Africa Green, implemented by Ecotourism Kenya and funded through Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) Germany.
CBTEs in Kenya are numerous, but often lack market access for their products. This is often because the CBTE do not operate as businesses, often have similar products and lack the right networks for ensuring sustainable market access and operations.
STTA developed a criteria for assessing market readiness of CBTEs in Kenya, DIY toolkits on sustainable consumption and production for CBTEs in Kenya and created a tourist guidebook for market ready CBTE products.
CBTEs that were beneficiaries of the SusTour project became stable, diversified their products, gained business management and marketing skills and were able to better access tourist markets.
