Speaker: Hon. Michael Mutua, CECM, Department of Tourism, Trade, and Enterprise Development, County Government of Kwale

Michael Mutua, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for the Department of Tourism, Trade, and Enterprise Development, County Government of Kwale, highlighted the county’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism through a collaborative and community-centered approach. He noted that Kwale County has undertaken joint marketing initiatives aimed at positioning the region as a competitive tourist destination, while at the same time empowering local communities to embrace sustainability practices.

He emphasized that significant strides have been made in capacity building, with the county facilitating training programs for key stakeholders, including boat operators, driver guides, and members of community-based tourism enterprises. These efforts, he explained, are intended to enhance service delivery, promote environmental stewardship, and foster inclusive economic growth. In addition, infrastructure development has remained a priority, with notable support extended to community-led projects such as the Gazi Women Boardwalk, kayaking tourism sites, and Millennium Handcrafts.

Environmental sustainability, he noted, remains a central pillar in the county’s development strategy. All tourism-related projects are subjected to environmental assessments, with strategic mitigation measures implemented to minimize ecological impact. He further cited the county’s partnership with the Samba Sports Youth Trust as a key example of collaboration that extends beyond tourism to address pressing issues such as immigration management and climate change.

These and other ongoing efforts have contributed significantly to Diani Beach’s continued recognition as Africa’s leading beach destination for eight consecutive years. Its ongoing nominations, including for 2025, further reinforce Kwale’s position as a premier coastal tourism hub.
