Supporting Tourism MSMEs Stabilization and Acceleration
Kenya Tourism MSMEs had a challenge with market access and had low adaptive capacities to shocks and stressors which saw most of them significantly impacted by covid-19
Community Based Tourism Design and Management
Community based tourism enterprises often lack proper business setups and experience challenges with product quality and market access.
STTA provided Technical Assistance for the Sustour Project in Kenya, a program of Switch Africa Green, implemented by Ecotourism Kenya and funded through Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) Germany.
Capacity Building for Community Conserved Areas
STTA has over the years worked with community development organizations, conservancies and conservancy associations to support good governance and sustainable management of conservancies for impact. The engagements have focused on capacity building, monitoring and skills development in managing common-pool resources.
Sustainability Reporting for Destination Brand Positioning
Kenya had never produced a destination sustainability report that could be used to inform management and destination marketing.
STTA consulted for Kenya Tourism Board to assess the status of sustainable tourism development in Kenya and produce a report that would influence destination management and marketing.
Developing Benchmarking Tools for Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable Tourism benchmarking improves value and competitiveness of a destination and tourism companies and products/services. Many destinations and micro-destinations within destinations within a country or regions do have credible benchmarking tools
Creating opportunities for local communities to participate in the tourism value chain
Local community participation in the tourism value chain has been an important part of the development process, and is likely to be a key driver for sustainable destination development. However, local communities have challenges in utilizing their resources for tourism and partnering with tourism stakeholders for market access.
Enhanced sustainable management capacities of conservancies
Market access and sustainable operations was a challenge for tourism businesses in Uganda, especially for those that relied on international tourism markets
STTA, under the Tourism Excellence Uganda Project, partnered with TourCert Germany, Uganda Tour Operators Association and Uganda Hotel Owners Association to support over 100 tourism businesses in Uganda in integrating sustainability into their operations.
Book project- Sustainable Tourism Dialogues in Africa
STTA and University of Brighton partnered to support sustainability and resilience of tourism MSMEs in Kenya in the wake of the significant impacts of covid-19 pandemic on travel and tourism. The partnership builds capacity of tourism MSMEs in Kenya, under the membership of Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK), to adapt to changing situations while supporting creation of sustainable tourism value chains that favor progressive MSMEs growth. Together, STTA and the University of Brighton have been holding sustainable tourism webinars, carrying out research and sourcing for funding for the benefit of tourism MSMEs in Kenya.
Creating Opportunities for local communities and MSMEs to participate in Tourism value chain
Tourism has often been presented as a strategy for supporting local communities in developing countries to address income poverty. However, local community entrepreneurs, which are mainly Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are often under resourced, and ill equipped to take advantage of tourism development opportunities.
